Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the following:

W203 C-class C180K (47k miles) started to lose engine coolant. The car is now with John Haynes, who subsequently found water in the engine oil. They've ruled out the radiator oil cooler for gearbox and the seals on the engine oil cooler. So next week they are planning to remove the head :(

The car has had full MB and JH service history, so I don't think that coolant could have frozen and cracked the block. Has anyone had anything similar? Are there any other areas to consider where water could cross over to the engine oil? Is there any history of dodgy head gaskets on this model? I'm very surprised the head gasket should need replacing after such a low mileage.

Apart from the small loss of water, car drives as it should.

Thank

I think my head gasket has gone - my water pump failure the culprit

Hi

What engine is in your c class is it a 111 or 271 engine. Because if it is a 271 i know there is a problem with the seals behind the main timing chain cover that seals it against the engine block. There is an easyish way of checking this by removing the water pump and seeing if the seals are still in place or have popped out

Update on this: Seems that Willow132 was spot on! Unfortunately, the head had already been removed - but the leak was confirmed to be from the seals behind the water pump.

I wonder how common this problem is? Its a shame I didn't post earlier, as Willows comment might have saved a big job on the head..

This is becoming a more common problem on this engine especially the early engine.

We were starting to more and more of these when i was working at a dealer

Same Issue - Oil in Coolant

Hi I have just read your thread on mercedesclub.org http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=61192 and believe I have similar symptoms on my 2005 C-Class Coupe W203 C180K. I had the coolant level indicator come on the other day and when I went to investigate I noticed that the expansion tank was empty. I topped the tank up and after a short drive the indicator was triggered again. After a quick investigation I noticed that there was oil within the coolant which was coming into the expansion tank on the return line. The car doesn't have the classic symptoms of a blown head gasket as it runs perfectly with no white smoke or overheating etc.
After reading your thread describing the seal issue with the timing case cover behind the water pump I thought that this might be an easy avenue to investigate. What causes the seals to pop out? Is it easy to notice this problem? Is it a difficult job to do?
I hope you can help me!
Regards
Jody Lukins

Water in oil

Hello Mark, I seem to have a similar problem. In the past 8 days I filled my water resevoir three times. My car is a C240 (W202) 2.4L V6, with 180000kms. The car drives ok, no overheating, no smoking whatsoever at exhaust. Also no visible leaks from the coolant system hoses or radiator. When I opened the oil filler cap, the inside of the cap had foam on it, it looked like left-over espresso. I have not drained the oil, but I'm convinced that the foam is a sign of water in oil. I have the car at the mechanic now (not MB dealer) for diagnosis. Will let you know what we found.
Voley.

I have seen 2 of these within the last 6 weeks or so, It seems to be coming increasingly common as I had not seen it at all before only heard about it through the grapevine..

I have a small loss of water going into the engine oil.

I have recently had water pump replaced following fan belt failure. The water loss started after that. I'm of the opinion that a fault usually develops after something has been changed, so probably pump rather than head gaskets. So, even though these are different engines, it is reassuring to learn there is a seal behind the pump which can be cheaply fixed (especially as I shall take it back to the monkeys that fitted the pump ;-)

Immediate indication of water in the oil is an emulsion looking like frothy coffee or whipped butter, but not as tasty. IMO fix the fault and flush/change oil and filter asap. Short term Bars Leak.

I have oil in my water, but no water in the engine oil. Its a N reg W202 1.8 and its got s full service history and it in real nice nick. I'm reluctent to throw money at it, so I'm just gonna use it till someone offers me a bit of a wad for it or it dies and gets broken for spares

its either your head gasket is blown, or , the seals of the oil cooler behind the oil filter has blown, or the cooler itself.
